Richard Lee "Sarge" Cart, of Lisbon, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015, at the VA Hospital in Iowa City.
A Celebration of Life will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Community Bible Church in Mount Vernon with military detail.
Sarge was born Aug. 1, 1946, to Herman Cart and Jeri Snyder in Ft. Lewis, Wash. He attended school at Knoxville.
Sarge married Patricia D. Bennett on Aug. 21, 1969, in Knoxville. He served in the United States Army during Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star. He retired from the U.S. Army after 23 years of service. He worked an additional 10 years as a cook for Kirkwood Community College.
Sarge was an active member of the Lisbon community and served on the board of Southeast Linn Community Center. He was a member of the American Legion for more than 30 years, serving for a time as Lisbon Post Commander and Linn County Commander, and received the Legionnaire of the Year Award in 2011. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW and the Vietnam Vets.
Sarge was also actively involved with meal planning/preparation for AWANAS. He loved to play cards, loved to help others, loved to cook, loved to make everybody eat and loved his family. He was a kind and caring man with a big heart.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Patricia; four children, Timothy (Lisa) of Lisbon, Toby (Dawn) of Springville, Molly Cart (Caleb Upah) of Cedar Rapids and Mandy Slaton (Nathan) of Lisbon; 11 grandchildren, Morgan, Patrick, Faith, Timothy Jr., Haley, Teyha, Chloe, Leah, Beau, Bennett and Tierryn; two great-grandchildren, Christian and Aubrey; a sister, Patricia Lindly; and many nieces and nephews, as well as numerous foreign exchange students who he considered family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws, Cleo and Maxine Bennett.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Community Bible Church in care of AWANAS meals
