Services for Joseph L. Porter, 76, who died Mar. 8, 1981 at Westridge Manor Nursing Home, were held Mar. 11 at Christian Church. Bybee & Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Interment was in Graceland Cemetery.
Rev. William Travis officiated at the services. Music was provided by Beatrice Miller, organist and John Crawford, soloist.
Pallbearers were
Frank Dainty, Jack Onstank, Dale Voyce, Graham Fee, Ernest Cowman and Wendell Robinson.
Masonic services were held at the funeral home on March 10, with Oriental Lodge No. 61 A.F. & A.M. officiating.
Mr. Porter was born June 5, 1904 in Brougton, Ill., the son of Oren T. and Minnie Allen Porter.
He attended the Knoxville Public Schools and graduated from the class of 1923.
He was married to Cleo Wheaton on April 6, 1925 at Osceola. The couple lived in the Dallas community, later moving
to Knoville.
He was the manager of the A & P store during the War years and in 1946 he started the grocery store on West Robinson, operating this until 1969. He was a receiving clerk and bus driver for the Knoxville schools.
He was a member of the Christian Church, Oriental Lodge no. 61 A.F. & A.M. and Order of Eastern Star.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Cleo on July 1, 1975 and his sister, Lena Austion.
He is survived by his son, Larry; three daughters, Joella Snook of Knoxville, Mrs. Willis (Opal Eileen) Oaks of Scotia, N.Y.; Mrs. Kenneth (Donna Lee) Stockley of Earlville, Ill.; and seven grandchildren.
