A Mass of Christian Burial for Florence Wren Ewart, 92, of Des Moines,
formerly of Knoxville, who died May 28, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des
Moines, was held May 30, 1997, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Knoxville. Burial
was at St. Anthony Cemetery. The Rev. Thomas Parlette officiated at the services.
Music was provided by Jim Kidder, organist. Pallbearers were Dave Lucas, Bob Conway,
Joe Stittsworth, Joe Conway, Michael Wadle, and Tom Stahowick.
Florence was born
May 9, 1905, in rural Knoxville, the daughter of William and May Stickle Wren. She
was raised in the Knoxville area, graduating in 1923. She attended the Iowa State
Teachers College in Cedar Falls, where she received her Primary Kindergarten Teaching
Certificate. She later returned and received a BA degree in teaching.
She taught
in Seattle, Wash: for 45 years retiring in 1967, She attended night school at the
University of Washington for five years to further her education-. Upon retirement,
she returned to Iowa and lived in the Des Moines and Knoxville areas, She was most
recently a resident of the Bishop Drumm Care Center in Des Moines. She was a member
of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, and the Seattle
Catholic Daughters.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Erv Ewart;
a brother, Tom Wren; and a sister, Bernice Conway. She is survived by a sister,
Agnes Stittsworth of Knoxville; three nephews, Joe Stittsworth of Grand Island,
Neb., and Bob and Joe Conway, both of Knoxville; and a niece, Mary Stahowick of
Des Moines. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Cemetery Fund, and St. Anthony's
Catholic Church.
