Barbara Jean (McClain) Garrison was born August 19, 1929 in Knoxville, Iowa the daughter of James Glen McClain and Sylvia Mae (McKim) McClain.

She was raised in the Knoxville area and in 1946 she was united in marriage to Howard Leroy Garrison.

To this union six children were born: Glenna, David, Howard, Steven, Jonathan and Daniel. Barbara stayed at home to raise her children until the youngest, Dan started school.

She then went to work for the Marion Hotel, running the restaurant. She later purchased the Marion Coffee Shop, which she owned and operated for many years.

Subsequently, Barbara ran the restaurant at Baker Drug Store, until her retirement. In her spare time, Barbara enjoyed reading, selling crafts at flea markets and her bridge club.

Studying genealogy was of great interest to Barbara and she discovered that she was a direct descendent of Marion County Pioneers.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a life member of the Marion County Historical Society.

Barbara passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at Jefferson Place, in Pella, at the age of 81 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, David; husband, Howard and her sister, Shirley Riley.

Those left to honor her memory include her children: Glenna (Rodney) DeZwarte, Howard Garrison, Steve (Sandy) Garrison, Jon (Bonnie) Garrison and Dan (Keri) Garrison all of Knoxville; daughter-in-law, Creta Garrison of Knoxville; 19 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; niece, Kelli Riley; nephew, Tim Riley and many other family members and friends. Interment Greenwood Cemetery – rural Knoxville, Iowa

The family invites relatives and friends to the First United Methodist Church for lunch following the committal service.

For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Pella, the First United Methodist Church Radio Ministry, or to the Marion County Historical Society.
