Funeral services for Eugene “Doc” Harvey, 83, of Knoxville, who died Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at the West Ridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Knoxville, were held Thursday, April 3, at Williams Funeral Home.
Rev. Robert Crandall officiated at the services. Music was provided by Katie Davis, vocalist, and Janet Westberg, organist
Interment was at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville.
Casketbearers were Jay Harvey, Rick Harvey, Scott Harvey, Terry Harvey, Andrew Ponce, Bryan Ponce, and Ron Sterling.
Honorary bearers were Bob McRoberts, Alan Ver Steeg, Merle Vickroy, and Dennis Williams.
Doc was born on February 28, 1920, in rural Marion County. He was the son of Bertha Edith Woody and Charles Schinick Harvey. He graduated from Knoxville High School in 1937.
On March 9, 1947, he married Vera Mae Finarty at the Methodist Church in Knoxville. To this union, two children were born.
For most of his life, Doc was a farmer. While farming, he was also employed driving a school bus. In addition, he worked for the county road department for 10 years. He served as a truck driver in the United States Air Force during World War II.
Many organizations benefited from the talents, time, and hard work Doc donated. He was active in 4-H for over 55 years. He was a Marion County Fair Board member for 38 years, a charter member of the Knoxville FFA, a past master of Tracy Masonic Lodge, and a member of the American Angus Association for over 40 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Arlys Ponce, two brothers, Dwight and Clifford Harvey; and two brothers-in-law, Wallace West, and James N. Mart.
He is survived by his wife, Vera Mae of Knoxville; a son and his wife, Danny and Ann Harvey of Knoxville; a son-in-law, Robert Ponce of Norwalk, two sisters, Freeda West of Harvey and Amy Brukelander of St. Louis, Mo.; and six grandchildren, Jay, Eric, and Cory Harvey and Bryan, Andrew, and Rebecca Ponce.
Memorials may be made to the Knoxville FFA or Knoxville Rescue Unit.
