Mary (Queener) Stotts, age 80, of Altoona, Iowa, formerly of Knoxville, passed away on Tuesday,
November 18, 2008, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Mary Stotts was born on April 14, 1928, in St. Charles, Virginia, the daughter of
Costo and Anna (Smith) Queener. The family moved to Knoxville when Mary was 4 years
old. Mary attended Knoxville schools and graduated from Knoxville High School.
She was united in marriage to Gene Stotts on November 22, 1946, in Newton, Iowa.
To this union, two children were born. Gene preceded her in death on July 22, 1998.
Mary was a realtor in Knoxville for 25 years, owning Stotts Realty. She moved to
Altoona following the death of her husband to help care for her great-grandchildren.
She will be remembered as a loving caregiver to all of her family and friends. Mary
enjoyed gardening, coin collecting, traveling, playing cards, and listening to gospel
and country music.
Her most enjoyable time was spent cooking for her family. Mary
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers.
Survivors include
1 daughter, Cheri Jensen, and her husband, Darrel of Altoona; 1 son, Dennis Stotts
of Des Moines; 4 grandchildren, Tricia McCarty and her husband, Jeff, Julie Pocock
and her husband, Brendan, Kristi Curtis and her husband, Todd, and Kimberly Stotts;
4 great-grandchildren, Tyler and Ashley McCarty and Aedan and Chloe Pocock; and
nine brothers and sisters.
The family requests memorials in Mary’s name be made to Iowa Health System Hospice
or Stowe Elementary School Library in Des Moines (where Tricia Mc Carty and Kristi
Curtis are teachers).
Funeral Services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2008, at the First
Assembly of God Church in Knoxville, with the Reverend Richard Queener (Mary’s brother officiating.
Interment was in the Graceland Cemetery. Pallbearers were Chad Queener,
Kevin Queener, David Queener, Robert Moon, Jeffery McCarty, and Todd Curtis.
Honorary
bearers were Steve Herwehe, Robert Gulling, Robert Schultz and Ron Voss. The musical
selection was “Amazing Grace”. The vocalist was Julie Pocock. Organist was Darlene
Mooberry.
Memorials in memory of Mrs. Stotts may be made to Iowa Health System Hospice
or Stowe Elementary School Library.
