Funeral services for Wilma Ethel (Maddy) Core, 90 years, 11 months and 15 days, of Pleasantville,
who died December 28 at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines due to complications of
Chronic Liver Disease was held December 30, 1999 at Mason Funeral Home in Pleasantville.
Rev. Marge Bradshaw and Rev. George Yetter officiated at the services. Music was
provided by Larry Conn, organist, and Gwen and Gary Miller, vocalists. Burial was
at Pleasantville Cemetery. Casketbearers were Mark Core, John McBride, David Dolbier,
Michael Core, Peter McBride, and Freddy Rodriguez.
Wilma was born on January 13, 1909 in Columbia, Iowa the daughter of Ralph and Carrie
(Hunt) Maddy.
Wilma was raised in the Columbia and Knoxville areas, graduating from Knoxville
High School. As a young woman, silt worked for the Marion County Auditor. On March
11, 1981 she was united in marriage to Clyde Core in Marshalltown, Iowa.
The couple
first farmed east of Pleasantville on Stringtown Road, until moving to a farm near
Red Rock in the spring of 1934. In the spring of 1941 they moved to a farm south
of Pleasantville and remained there until moving to town in 1967. The couple started
wintering in Texas and Florida in the 1970s. They left Florida in the Spring of
1996 and permanently moved back to Pleasantville.
Wilma was a talented musician, playing the piano by ear and singing in a beautiful
soprano voice, and was still singing and playing for residents after she was in
the nursing home. She also enjoyed painting, ceramics, gardening, and cooking. She
was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Thelma Rietveld, and great-granddaughter, Aubrey Vereen.
She is survived by her husband; two sons; Richard of Rowlett, Texas, and Ronald
of Hampton, Iowa; daughter, Nancy Underwood of Jacksonville, Florida; nephew, Jon
Rietveld; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren,
eight step-great-grandchildren, three cousins; Pauline McNeish, Frances Moon and
Clifford Line all of Knoxville.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Hospice Kavanagh House, and St.
Paul’s United Methodist Church.
