Memorial services for Leland Beryl Moon, 80, of Knoxville, who died on Sunday, December
24, 2000, at Knoxville Area Community Hospital, were held on Friday, December 29,
at First United, Methodist Church in Knoxville.
Rev. Peter J. Peterson officiated
at the services. Eulogist were Art Angus and Bryce Bartley. Music was provided by
Katie Davis, vocalist-guitarist, and Geoffrey Shultz, organist.
His body has been donated to the University of Iowa Anatomy Department. Burial of
the cremains will be at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville at a later date.
Leland was born on June 5, 1920, in Wesley, to James Reed and Florence Mae (Stone)
Moon. He graduated from Knoxville High School with the class of 1938 after which
he attended Simpson College on a scholastic scholarship.
He served in the Navy during World War II for 2 1/2 years, serving aboard a tanker
in the Pacific Theatre.
Leland married Frances Line on July 23, 1939.
He worked at Community National/Brenton Bank for 41 years.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church for 62 years serving as chairman
of the board of trustees. He served as President of Red Rock Lake Association, Central
Iowa Chapter of the Bank Administration Institute, Morning Kiwanis, and Chamber
of Commerce.
He served as Treasurer of Indian Hills Lake Region Tourism Council and Knoxville
Community School District. He was a recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Community
Service Award. He enjoyed traveling and seeing the country and had visited all 50
states. His interests were history, genealogy, the Civil War, and covered bridges
He had a special bond with his brother, Ed, who had cerebral palsy, being the one
Ed turned to for his needs and was a big help to his parents.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Dennis, Ben, Oren, Edwin
and Eldon; and two sisters, Fern and Esther.
He is survived by his wife, Frances; two daughters, Joyce Henning of San Clemente, Calif., and Alison Bartley, of Austin, Texas; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren;
one brother, Rubert; and many other relatives and special friends.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Radio Fund or the Bessie
Spaur Butterfly Garden.
