Wilma Faye (Colwell) Woody was born on November 11, 1921, in rural Knoxville, Iowa, the daughter
of Wrex Colwell and Vena (Hardin) Colwell. She graduated from Knoxville High School
and went on to further her education at Simpson College where she got her degree
in Elementary Education.
On June 28, 1942, Faye was united in marriage to Kenneth Woody at the Colwell home.
The two lived on the Woody Farmstead from 1942 to 1953 when they moved to their
farm in Marion County. They farmed there until moving to town in 1983.
Faye taught at Lorimor Schools before teaching in Knoxville until her retirement in 1984.
Following their retirement, they loved traveling the world and the many new experiences.
Faye was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, being involved as a
Deacon and with the Morning Circle. She was a member of the Knoxville City Library
Board, Chapter M of PEO, and the Delta Delta Delta Sorority of Simpson College.
Faye was also Miss Knoxville in 1938 and Knoxville’s Woman of the Year in 1974. As
a Beta Sigma Phi Member, Faye held offices as President, Vice President, and Secretary
Treasurer. Faye started the CheeriChix 4-H Club and was a Chairman of the Extension
Youth 4-H Council.
She also volunteered with Friends of the Library, the Hospital Auxilliary and the
Book Club.
Faye passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2011, at Westridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at the age of 89 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wrex and Vena Colwell.
Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Kenneth; daughters; Jewell (Larry)
Hays of Cedar Falls, Susan (Frank) Rhoades of Ankeny; 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
