Return to Class of 1963

William Hanna05/20/2020
William Thomas Hanna Jr. (Tom), 75, of Winterset, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 20, 2020, at his home.

Tom was born on February 14, 1945, to William Sr. and Bettie Hanna in Oskaloosa. He grew up in rural Knoxville and farmed near Lacona for many years. Tom and his wife Barb ended up raising their family of three in rural Lucas County. He also worked and retired from the Des Moines Register after 35 years of faithful service.

Tom was as good as they come. He loved to volunteer and spend his time working with his hands. Most notably, he helped build homes in Mexico and for Habitat for Humanity. Traveling was his second passion. He and his wife Barb enjoyed their retirement years traveling to places like Texas, California, Alaska, and even Europe. He was the kindest person you could meet as he would give you the shirt off his back if you asked for it.

Tom is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barb (Putz) Hanna; sons, Bill (Sherri) Hanna, and Mike (Brenda) Hanna; daughter, Julie (Pat) Cahalan; brother, JD (Anita) Hanna; sister, Penny Hunt; and 7 grandchildren, T.J., Kyle, Hanna, Logan, Shane, Meadow, and Layla.
