A Requiem Mass for Thomas Wilson Stewart, 69, of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Knoxville,
who died March 27, in Manatee Memorial Hospital, was held April 1, 1996, at the
Church of the Annunciation, in Holmes Beach.
Thomas was born October 27, 1926, in Miami, Fla., the son of Katherine and T.W.
Stewart. He moved to Knoxville with his parents in 1939 and graduated from Knoxville
High School in 1944.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-46. He was the first Eagle
Scout in Marion County. He received a BS degree from Miami University at Oxford,
Ohio, in 1948, and a Juris Doctor with distinction from the University of Iowa in
1951.
He was admitted to the Iowa Bar Association in 1951, the Florida Bar in 1952,
and the U.S. Supreme Court practice in 1969. He was an associate with Daniel and
Woodward in Bradenton, Fla., from 1952-57. He was a partner with Daniel, Woodward,
and Stewart firm from 1957 to 1968, and had a private law practice in Bradenton,
from 1968 to 1996.
He was an assistant professor of business law at Florida State University in Tallahassee,
1951-52, and moved to Bradenton in 1952. He served as chairman of the Manatee County
Republican Committee, 1970-71, and was a Florida State Republican Committeeman,
1970-71.
He was a member of the Manatee County Bar Association (president, 1968-69),
and the Florida Bar Association. He was also a member of Mensa, the Manatee County
Historical Society, University of Iowa President's Club, and Alpha Tau Omega. He
was a member of the Church of the Annunciation, in Holmes Beach, Fla.
He was united in marriage to Priscilla Ann Mabie on August 28, 1949.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, of Bradenton, Fla.
