Funeral services for Norman Riley Hays, 65, of Knoxville, who died February 19, 1996, at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital, were held February 22, 1996, at Bybee and Davis Funeral Home in Knoxville.
Burial was at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. The Rev. Martha Ward and Max Hall officiated at the services. Music was provided by Jim Kidder, the organist. Pallbearers were Jim Hicks, Phil Reser, Steve Guitar, Terry Wilson, Jerrold Jordan, and Dwaine Meyer.
Norman was born September 7, 1930, in Des Moines, the son of Norman R. Sr., and Marion G. Orr Hays.
He was raised in Knoxville and graduated from Knoxville High School in 1948. He attended Grinnell College for two years and transferred to the University of Iowa, where he received a B.A. in 1952. He earned his law degree from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn., in 1955.
After graduation, he returned to Knoxville and went into law practice with his father. He served as Marion County Attorney for six years, and in 1973, became a Magistrate Judge for the county. In 1987, he was named an Associate Judge for the Fifth Judicial District for the State of Iowa. He retired in September 1995.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Ann (Coon) Mettler on November 24, 1957.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Loren. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; a son, Eric of West Des Moines; a daughter, Sarah Cusick of Omaha, Neb.; a brother, Lee Hays of Newton; a sister, Harriet Hickey of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and four grandchildren.
