Sylvia Elizabeth (Veldhuis) Uitermarkt, the daughter of Reverend Stephen and Ann (Slot) Veldhuis, was born June 8, 1957, in Orange City, Iowa. She spent her childhood living in various locations in Iowa, Michigan, and Ontario, Canada, following her parents’ call to ministry. She graduated from Knoxville High School and Central College in Pella.

On December 18, 1976, Sylvia was united in marriage with Robert A. Uitermarkt. Robert and Sylvia began their life together in the Otley area. They were blessed with two sons: Jesse, born June 7, 1982, and Caleb, born October 2, 1993. She worked at Vriendschap Village where she touched the lives of many residents.

On September 17, 1995, her husband, Robert, passed away. From that moment on her focus became raising and educating her children in accordance with her faith in Christ. Sylvia gained many friends in the Peace Homeschool Group. Her life was an ongoing transformation in her walk with God.

In 2012 Sylvia was diagnosed with lymphoma. She bravely fought the fight to live and survive despite multiple medical setbacks and personal loss. Her final transformation came when she declared Christ is still on the throne and His will be done.

At 3:10 Monday morning, July 29, 2013, with family, friends, and the presence of God surrounding her, she took her last breath and began her new life in Heaven. Her legacy of faith, courage, and wisdom will be carried on proudly by her sons who loved and cherished her more than words can express.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband and parents. She is survived by her sons, Jesse and his fiancé, Lyndsay, and Caleb; step-grandson, Kenny; brothers and sisters-in-law; and several cousins and aunts living in the Netherlands.
