Ruth Marlene (Bassett) Edwards passed away on April 25, 2018, at the Legacy Lodge in Chariton at the age of 84 years. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 28, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton.

The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The interment will be at the Columbia Cemetery. Memorials are requested to the Chariton Christian Church Disciples of Christ.

Ruth was born July 22, 1933, in Knoxville, Iowa to George and Elreta (Loynachan) Bassett. She grew up in Knoxville, graduating from Knoxville High School in 1951. She then worked for the telephone company as an operator. On February 14, 1952, she was united in marriage to William Edwards. They were blessed with four children: Jerry, Jim, Jane, and Joe.

Ruth had always been active in her church, first with the Belinda Church and then with the Christian Church in Chariton. She was involved with many aspects of the church and sang in the choir for many years. While she was raising her family she enjoyed helping with all the 4-H activities. Ruth always kept a garden and liked to help with work on the farm. She did many crafts and loved to sew and quilt.

Ruth and Bill enjoyed camping and traveling. They belonged to Red Haw Campers and loved to go to Arizona during the winters.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, William; her parents: George and Elreta (Loynachan) Bassett; daughter, Jane DeHaven; granddaughter, Sarah McFarland; and brothers: John Bassett, Harold Bassett, and Marvin Bassett.

She will be greatly missed by her children: Jerry (Marlene) Edwards, Jim (Marlene) Edwards, and Joe (Luann) Edwards; son-in-law, Steve DeHaven; grandchildren: Emily (Louie) Cox, Lydia Edwards, Ian Edwards, Sylvia (Donovan) McFarland, Kayla Edwards, Jody (Shondra) McLaughlin, Jennifer (Josh) Gerrietts, Amy DeHaven, Tessa Edwards, and Sierra Edwards; 10 great-grandchildren; and siblings: Kenneth Bassett, Alvin (Shirley) Bassett, and Mary (Harold) King; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
