Robert Dennis “Bob” DeJoode, age 76 of Knoxville passed away late Saturday evening August 12, 2017 at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Visitation for Bob will be held from 12:00 Noon to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville. Bob’s family will be present from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, August 17, 2017 at the Winfield Funeral Home with Elder Bill McDonald officiating. Burial will follow services at Greenwood Cemetery of rural Knoxville.
Robert was born on May 27, 1941 at home on the farm in rural Marion County, Iowa to John and Lavon (Abrahamson) De Joode. Bob was raised on the family dairy farm with his two sisters and four brothers. He went to Georgia Ridge Country School and graduated from Knoxville High School, Class of 1959.
Bob lived in Marion County all his life. He farmed for many years and was well known for his dozer and backhoe work. Bob worked many years for Marion County. He worked for Bontrager Construction and was also self-employed for many years doing custom backhoe and dozer work.
On October 13, 1984 at the First Presbyterian Church in Knoxville Robert and Nancy Jean Hensley were united in marriage. Bob and Nancy have shared almost 33 years of marriage together and their six children: Jan, Aleta, Troy, Doug, Patrick, and Sherri.
Bob was a very active and talented man. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, camping, and playing cards. He was talented in the kitchen and enjoyed cooking, canning, and was great at making pizza. Bob was also elected to the Marion County Board of Supervisors and served for four years.
Bob is survived by his wife of almost 33 years Nancy DeJoode of Knoxville; three children, Jan and husband Brian Wehrle of New Sharon, Aleta DeJoode of Pleasant Hill, and Troy DeJoode and fiancé Tina Smith of Des Moines; three step-children, Doug and wife Michelle Douthit of Tuscon, AZ, Patrick Douthit of Eagle Grove, IA, and Sherri and husband Tim McDonald of Knoxville; nine grandchildren, Matthew (Elizabeth) Wehrle, Caleb Wehrle, Joey DeJoode, Corey DeJoode, Brady DeJoode, Heather (Clint) Butow, Jackson McDonald, Cade McDonald, and Anna McDonald; and five great-grandchildren.
Bob is also survived by his sister Bonnie Mosher; four brothers, Eddie (Eunice) DeJoode, Jerry DeJoode, Carl (Linda) DeJoode, and Paul (Dorothy) DeJoode. Bob was preceded in death by his parents John and Lavon DeJoode and his sister Carol Borchert.
A Memorial will be established in Bob’s name for the Knoxville Dollars for Scholars Program.
