Richard Delano Deitrick was born on May 6, 1933, in Knoxville, Iowa the son Earl and Mabel (Knapp) Deitrick. He was raised in Knoxville.

In 1951 he entered the United States Air Force, he served four years and was honorably discharged in 1955.

He married Allene Keller on May 8, 1955 in Knoxville. The couple moved to Waterloo in 1956 and have lived in that area since.

Richard first worked for Titus Manufacturing, and then for the Evansdale Police Department for 10 years. He then worked for Wickes Lumber and eventually started his own garbage service, which he owned and operated until retiring in 1990. He had previously served on the Evansdale City Council for three years. He enjoyed boating, fishing and woodworking.

He died August 20, 2001, at the Des Moines V.A. Medical Center.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Allene, five sons, Jeff of Carlisle, Rick of Jesup, Randy of Waterloo, Steve of Evansdale and Greg of San Diego, Calif.; his brother, Robert of Urbandale, a sister, Barbara Remy of Colonial Heights, Va.; 10 grandchildren and many other family members and friends.
