Leland Loren Bane, 80, of Knoxville died of complications of muscular dystrophy Saturday at home. The body was cremated, and memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bybee and Davis Funeral Home in Knoxville. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date at Graceland Cemetery there.
Mr. Bane was born in Oskaloosa and had lived in Knoxville most of his life. He was a retired partner with Bane Chevrolet and a Navy veteran. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; a daughter, Susan Bane-Green of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Gene of Sun City, Ariz.; and two grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Knoxville Rescue Unit.
Leland Loren Bane was born on February 22, 1921, in Oskaloosa, Iowa the son of Loren Bane and Barbara (Menefee) Bane. He was raised in Knoxville and graduated from high school there.
On May 24, 1942, Leland was united in marriage to Margaret Richards in Unionville, Missouri. He then enlisted in the United States Navy, and soon after it was discovered that he had Muscular Dystrophy and he was honorably discharged. The couple moved to Mina, Nevada during the war and he drove a truck hauling supplies across the country.
After the war, he and Margaret returned to Knoxville where Leland worked as the parts manager at the family business, Bane Chevrolet. He and his brother, Gene, eventually became partners in the dealership.
Leland retired in 1971. In his younger years, he was a very active pilot and held ground school for many people in his basement. Leland was also a H.A.M. radio operator his entire life, which he greatly enjoyed.
He was a very intelligent person, and he could usually figure out a solution to any problem that presented itself; he became very computer literate in his later years and was quite adapt to fixing his mechanical wheelchair.
Above all else, he loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his wife, daughter, and two granddaughters. Leland was also quite fond of Joe Ford, Wilma Bost, and Karen Hollingshead who were his primary caregivers as his illness progressed and without whom he would not have been able to stay home.
Leland passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2001, at his home at the age of 80 years, 5 months, and 27 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Dosha Harris. Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Margaret; daughter, Susan Bane-Green of Cedar Rapids; two granddaughters: Heather Green of Chicago and Kari Green of Cedar Rapids; brother, Gene Bane of Sun City, Arizona; niece, Karen Bane McGimpsey; nephew, Jim Bane and many other family members and friends.
