Services for Merna Mildred (Goodwin) Goebel, 67, of Knoxville, who died of cancer Tuesday, Aug.
28, 1990 at Knoxville Area Community Hospital, were held Aug. 31 at Williams Funeral
Home. Interment was in Graceland Cemetery. Dr. John Bolen officiated at the services.
Music was provided by Joan Arnott, organist, and Gordon M. Arnott, vocalist.
Mrs. Goebel was born on Dec. 18, 1922, at Buxton, the daughter of Carl and Faye Goodwin.
She attended Knoxville High School and entered military service with the Marine
Corp in 1941 serving until 1945 while achieving the rank of Sargent. On July 20,
1945, she married Howard Goebel.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters,
and one brother. She is survived by two daughters, Sharon Wilson of Waynesville,
Mo. and Major Frances Hargis of Fort Campbell, Ky.; four grandchildren; two brothers,
Bob of Glenwood and Charles of Knoxville; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces
and nephews.
Pallbearers were Bob, Dick, Jim and John Brees, Kevin Burgesson, David
McCall and Curtis Sorenson. She had been employed by the VA Medical Center as a secretary
to the chief nurse until moving to Missouri.
In 1965 she accepted a position in
Washington, D.C. for the Department of the Army as secretary to the general in charge
of the Materials Branch. She retired from the Army in 1978 after 30 years of service.
