Funeral services for Merle E. Schlotterback, Sr., 78, of Knoxville, who died November
19, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, were held November 22, 1999
at Evans-McCleery Funeral home in Knoxville.
Burial was at Graceland Cemetery. Reverend
Charlie McMillian officiated at the services. Casketbearers were Merle Schlotterback,
Jr., Bill Schlotterback, Bryan Schlotterback, Robert Evans, Dick Reed, John Reed,
and Gary Verwers. Honorary Casketbearers were Susan Evans, Jim Reed, Nancy Kingrey
and Rita Crabtree.
Merle was born March 15, 1921 in Knoxville, the son of Clyde
and Mary Courtney Schlotterback. He graduated from Knoxville High School in 1940.

He was united in marriage on February 17, 1945 in Des Moines to Marjorie Turner.
She passed away in March of 1965.
He married Ruth Reed on June 15, 1968 in Omaha,
Nebraska.
Merle lived his entire life in Marion County. He was a driver for Shinn
Trucking Company, a police officer for the Knoxville Police Department and was retired
after 16 years as a deputy for the Marion County Sheriffs Department. He was also
a Navy Veteran of WWII.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife,
Marjorie; and two brothers, Bob and Dwight.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth of
Knoxville; five sons, Merle Jr. of Pleasantville, Bill, Knoxville, Jim Reed and
John Reed both of Melcher-Dallas and Dick Reed of Knoxville; three daughters, Susan
Evans, Nancy Kingrey, and Rita Crabtree, all of Knoxville; one sister, Irene Mart,
Knoxville; twenty four grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Memorials may
be made to American Lung Association of Iowa.
