Funeral services for Merle Bailey, 77, of Knoxville, who died December 5, 1998
at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital, were held December 8, 1998, at Williams
Funeral Home in Knoxville.

Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery in Marion County. Pastor
Martha Ward officiated at the services. Music was provided by Darlene Mooberry, organist.
Pallbearers were Max Hill, Larry Renard, Rick Renard, Shaun Renard, Brandon Williams,
and Fred Williams.

Merle was born June 9, 1921, in Marion County, the son of Mary
and Leona Penland and Alfred Bert Bailey. He lived in the Marion County area his
entire life. He graduated from the Knoxville High School in 1938.

He served in the
U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked as a nurse at the VA Hospital in Knoxville
until his retirement in 1976. After his retirement, he worked as a USDA Meat. Inspector
at Marshall Packing Company in Marshalltown.

He was united in marriage to Irene
Alice Engle on March 29, 1956, in Gladbrook. He was preceded in death by his parents;
his wife; and a brother, Howard.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Knoxville.
