Lorraine Cora (Monroe) Swayne, 83, of Indianola, formerly
of Knoxville, died of a heart ailment Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center there. Graveside services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Greenwood Cemetery in Marion County. The Rev.
Robert C. Smith officiated at the services.

She was born on Oct. 4, 1918, in Knoxville, the daughter of Elzy and Leona (Rankin)
Monroe. She graduated from Knoxville High School in 1936.

<br />
She married Lester "Pete" Swayne on Nov. 20, 1937, in Knoxville. She was a loving
mother and homemaker. In addition, she worked for Continental Overall Factory, the
VA Hospital, East Elementary and for various restaurants in Knoxville.

<br />
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church. She was a wonderful cook and
enjoyed making pies. She also enjoyed sewing, gardening and entertaining guests.

<br />
After the death of her husband in 1989, she continued to live in her own home before
moving to Indianola in 1996.
<br />
<br />
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son and two sisters.
<br />
<br />
She is survived by a daughter, Sonja Blackman of Indianola; a son, Marvin Swayne
of Kansas City, Mo.; three sisters, Lucille Goemaat of Knoxville, Wilma Monroe and
Glenna Cobb, both of Iowa City; two brothers, Hoyt Monroe of Jefferson and Dwight
Monroe of Bondurant; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to the Indianola Good Samaritan Center or Hospice of Central
Iowa.
