Services for Retired U.S. Army U. Col. Lester L. Holmes, 79, of Frederick, Md. and formerly of Knoxville, who died April 22, 1984 at Frederick Memorial Hospital, were held April 28 at Etchison Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Holmes was born on Feb. 4, 1905 in Knoxville, the son of William and Margaret Harsin Holmes.
He served as a professional soldier and had compiled a distinguished military career prior to his retirement in 1961. Following his retirement, he had served as protocol officer at Fort Detrick until his retirement in 1969.

He had continuous service with the Boy Scouts for 54 years, completing his Eagle Scout Badge in 1951, induction in the Order of the Arrow in 1964, and was awarded the Silver Beaver in 1965. He was recently rewarded the first ever "Distinguished Scouter of the Year Award."

He was a member of the First Ultra of Christ Scientist, Frederick Rotary Club, Lynch Lodge No. 163, AF & A Masons, All Ghan Temple, AAONMS, Chesapeake Consistory and Frederick Valley Scottish Rite bodies.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Rhodes Holmes; two children, Lee B. of Fairfax Station, Va. and Mrs. Phoebe N. Webb of Long Beach, Cal.; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one nephew; and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Shoemaker of Longmont, C61. and Mrs. Ada DeCamp of Knoxville.

Memorials may be sent to the Appalachian Trail Conservation, Harpers Ferry, W. Va., or to the church of one's choice.
