Return to Class of 1935

Don Slocum 6/30/2007
Lawrence Donald “Don” Slocum was born on March 3, 1917, on the family farm north of Knoxville to James L. and Minnie (Baughman) Slocum.

His early life was spent at home with his family on the farm. He attended rural school and then graduated from Knoxville High School in 1935.

On Christmas day 1937, Don married Margaret Riley. To this union three children were born, Dawna, Larry, and Elayne. Don tried several modes of employment, including farming, before he went to work for the Maytag Company in 1952.

He came to love the work and became engaged in tool and die repair. He retired after working for over 25 years. He then worked as a court attendant for the 5th Judicial Court.

Don joined the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Community of Christ) in 1948 and was called to the office of a priest. He served many years as church school superintendent and as Bishop’s agent for the local congregation.

Late in life he became interested in the Masonic Lodge and joined that organization and the Order of Eastern Star.

He served as a Worthy Patron and Chaplain for many years. Don also served on the board of directors for the Knoxville Senior Center and the morning Kiwanis. In his spare time, Don enjoyed bowling and golf.

He departed from this life on June 30, 2007, at the Comfort House in Pella at the age of 91.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Margaret; children, Dawna Larson and Ken
Reynolds; Larry and Thelma Slocum of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Elayne, and Gary Waggoner
