Martha Josephine “Jo” (Kurtz) Cooley was born in Louisa, Iowa, on 6 Feb 1898, to Ezra Cornelius Kurtz (b.Dec 18, 1854) and Elizabeth Chandler (b.Dec 1, 1857)

Martha had 10 siblings: Lawrence Chandler Kurtz, Frank Leslie Kurtz and 8 other siblings.
Martha married Floyd Evert Cooley (1892-1938)* in 1919, at age 21

Floyd was born on August 3, 1892, in Knoxville, Marion Co., Iowa.
They had 6 children: Vernon Paul Cooley, John William Cooley and 4 other children.

Martha passed away on 1 Apr 1988 in Marion, County Iowa., at age 90
Josephine Cooley, 90, of Knoxville died of cancer Friday at Knoxville Area Community Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Indiana Chapel Cemetery in Attica.

Mrs. Cooley was born in Louise County. She retired 25 years ago from Knoxville Veterans Administration Hospital.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and its Protheom class, American Legion Auxiliary, Knoxville Women’s Club and Women’s Christian Temperance Union, and she was a charter member of Marion County Historical Society and past noble grand and recording secretary for the Rebekah Lodge.Josephine Kurtz 2

Survivors include two sons, Vernon of Knoxville and John of Dana Point, Calif; three daughters, Marthabelle Pickart of Lakeland, Fla., Catherine Compton of Key Largo, Fla., and Joanne Presley of Ames; 14 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
