Family Reflections
Jerry Mecham, age 75 of Kingston, Washington passed away June 7 in a Seattle Hospital surrounded by loved ones.
Jerry was born in San Diego California and lived there until Dad was released from the Navy after WWII. He spent his childhood in Knoxville Iowa and graduated from Knoxville High School in 1964.
He joined the Navy right out of High School. He is a Vietnam Veteran serving on the Carriers USS Ranger and USS Forestall until his discharge in 1968 at Bremerton Washington Navy Station. There he met Ann who would become his wife on August 12, 1968. They were blessed with over 50 years of marriage.
Jerry got a job as a Deck Hand on the Washington State Ferry’s. He quickly rose through the ranks and was promoted to Captain of the Wala Wala Ferry boat in 1981. He retired in 1993 as Senior Port Captain Washington State Ferry’s.
Jerry treasured his family, especially his grand kids, and friends. He enjoyed fishing, crabbing and made a great tour guild for us Iowans. He loved to take us fishing for Salmon; teaching us to harvest, shuck and eat oysters, hunt for crabs and clams, and show us around the beautiful area that he lived in. It usually culminated into a dinner of Ann’s steamed clams!
Jerry is survived by his wife Ann of Kingston Washington; two children, Jerri Ann (Mike) McDogel, and Scott; Three grand kids, Ben, Demri, and Alex all in the Kingston area.
Jerry is also survived by his three brothers; Gordon, Bruce (Marla), and Rand (Christy) all in central Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents Elmo and Sara, his mother and father in law Bud and Elaine Brazeau, and a sister in law Nancy (Gordon) Mecham.
We’ll have a moments silence.
Condolences can be made to the family at 6301 NE State Hwy 104, Kingston, WA 98346-8432 Rand and Chris are inviting you to come to their house following the service for Jake’s BBQ ribs.
