Jay John Miles was born November 13, 1931 in Knoxville, Iowa the son of Harry and Helen (Miller) Joy.

He graduated from Knoxville High School in the Class of 1950. After high school, Jay for Pella corp. and then served in the United States Army, during the Korean War, from 1952 to 1954. Jay returned to Knoxville and enrolled at A.I.B., earning a degree in business and accounting.

On September 14, 1958, he was united in marriage to Gloria Hoffman in Birmingham, Iowa. The couple then made their home in Knoxville and Jay worked for the State of Iowa as an insurance examiner.

He worked for the State for many years and later worked as a contract examiner for Georgia, Kentucky, and Oklahoma. He retired in 1998 and in 2007 he and Gloria moved to Pella.

During their retirement years, Jay and Gloria enjoyed many winters in McAllen, Texas. Jay had also traveled throughout the United States on job assignments and took his family along when possible.

He loved following politics on CNN and reading USA Today. He also attended political rallies every four years and met many candidates. Jay was an avid Hawkeye fan through thick and thin. Above all else, he was a loving, family-oriented man.

Jay passed away on Friday, September 20, 2013, at the Pella Regional Health Center at the age of 81 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Justine Goodnight and Betty Emerson, and nephew, Rick Roberts.

Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife of 55 years, Gloria of Pella; son, Jeffrey of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Dr. Tracy Miles of Kansas City, MO two grandchildren, and many other family members and friends.
