Funeral services for Herbert "Herb" Lee Gilchrist, 76, of Knoxville, who died Tuesday,
Dec. 17, 2002, at Griffin's Nursing Center, in Knoxville, were held Friday, Dec.
20, at Williams Funeral Home.
Pastors Steve Kowbel and Matt Borst officiated at
the services. Music was provided by Darlene Mooberry, organist, and Jim Kidder, vocalist.
Masonic service was given by Masonic Lodge #229 of Attica.
The interment was at Breckenridge Cemetery in rural Marion County. Casketbearers were
Les Beaver, Peck Beaver, Dan Dennison, Cecil Harry, Louie Harry, and Wendall Robinson.
Herb was born on August 7, 1926, near Red Rock. He was the son of Blanche DeHeer
and Lester Orrie Gilchrist. He attended country schools in the area and Knoxville
High School.
He married Rosetta Mae Hevlin on January 3, 1948. To this union, four children were
born. After Rosetta's death, Herb married Maude Marie Hall on August 20, 1983. Maude
brought two ' daughters into the family.
Herb did construction and actually built an entire house by himself. Later he worked
for the Farmer's Cooperative in Knoxville as a truck driver for 15 years. Herb worked
in the kitchen at the Veterans 's Administration Hospital for eight years. He enjoyed
delivering feed to the farmers and traveling on the rural roads. Herb was a " Jack
of all trades" and could fix or build anything.
Herb joined the Oriental Lodge #61 in Tracy on September 28, 1956. Currently, Herb
is a 46-year member of the Masonic Lodge' #229 in Attica. Herb stayed active after
retirement. He met friends early each morning for coffee at Mcdonald’s. He took great
pleasure in telling a good story. He also liked to go to the county home to visit.
Herb and Maude frequently took " road trips" around Lake Red Rock, to the place where
the original town of Red Rock was and to watch the eagles and reminisce about old
times. Herb took great joy in his children and grandchildren. He lived life to the
fullest.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife and half-sister. He is survived
by his wife, Maude of Knoxville; two daughters, Marilyn Owens and husband Pete of
Newton and Donna Gilchrist of Pella; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Peggy
Gilchrist of Galesburg and Delbert and Chris Gilchrist of Newton; two stepdaughters
and their husbands, Linda and Clarence Evans of Knoxville and Sally and Richard
Simon of Denver, Colo.; his stepmother, Winnie Gilchrist of Knoxville; one sister, Ruby Karr of Knoxville; three brothers, Roger Gilchrist of Swan, Dan Gilchrist of
Pella and Hal Dean Gilchrist of Knoxville; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Faith Baptist Church or Hospice of Central Iowa.
