Funeral services for Eugene "Gene" Edwin Ver Steeg, 80, of Knoxville, who died Monday,
Dec. 16, 2002 at Knoxville Area Community Hospital, were held Thursday, Dec. 19,
at Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville.

Elder Bill McDonald officiated at the services.
Jim Kidder was the vocalist accompanied by Darlene Mooberry, organist. Interment
was at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. Casketbearers were Tony Burns, Tyler Burns,
Robert Haning, Robert Lamb, Louis Stansberry, Bill Ver Steeg, and Matthew Ver Steeg.

Gene was born on April 1, 1922, in Knoxville. He was the son of Marjorie M. Adams
and Nicholas Ver Steeg. He graduated from Knoxville High School in 1942.

On August
2, 1950 he married Margaret Bennett in Oskaloosa. To this union one daughter was
born. Gene and Margaret became members of the First Regular Baptist Church in Knoxville
in 1975.

Gene like to fix and build anything that needed fixed or built. He was
a carpenter and owner of "Ver Steeg Construction" in Knoxville. He could build a
house from start to finish. He had the skills of the many trades required in the
construction industry. Gene enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Talking cars, technology and politics while drinking coffee at Hardee's was a favorite
pastime. Gene had been living at Westridge Nursing and Rehab Center since January
1998.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Margaret in 1990. He is
survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Tony Burns of Pleasantville; two
grandsons, Scott Burns and Tyler Burns of Pleasantville; an aunt, Bess Miller of
Davenport; and two cousins, Matthew Ver Steeg of West Des Moines and Bill Ver Steeg
of Knoxville.

Memorials may be made to his family. Arrangements were made by Williams
Funeral Home.
