Herbert O. Dixon, 85, passed away on Oct. 15, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center.

A native of Knoxville, he was the son of the late Lyda Mae and John Archibald Dixon.

Herb was a wonderful loving husband and father of four children, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 wonderful years, Anna Marie of the home, and children; Gary Dixon (Mary) of Oskaloosa., Herb Dixon Jr. (Lorna) of Adel, John Dixon (Linda) of Olathe, Kan.., and Mitzi (Dixon) Harmon (husband Tom) of Kernersville, N.C.

He loved his grandchildren and was proud of them all; Gary Jr., Steve, Amy Lynn, Tonja Sue, Todd, Kenny “0” and Ryder “D”. Great-grandchildren are Gary III, Luke, Jason, Christopher, Chantel, Majesta Grace, and Braxton.

Herb was a Motor Mac First Class in the US Navy in WWII.

He was aboard the LST 605 which made the first landing on Leyte in the Philippines. He and his crew were credited with downing 21 enemy planes.

He worked for A & P Tea Co. for 23 opened his own store Dixon’s #1 Discount Store for three years and eventually retired as an Insurance Man. Herb worked part-time at Harris Teeter after retiring to Greensboro, N.C., and truly loved serving his customers.

Herb was an ordained Elder in the Restored Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

He will be sadly missed by his family and friends but we know he is in a beautiful place.

Services celebrating his life were held on Oct. 24 at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Allen Stepp officiating
