Funeral services for Gloyd Leroy Carter, 67, of Knoxville, who died May 16, at the
Knoxville Area Community Hospital, were held May 20, 1996, at Williams Funeral Home
in Knoxville.
Military honors were conducted by American Legion Post #168, and Veterans
of Foreign Wars Post #3519. Burial was at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville.
Pastor
Robert Price and Rev. Robert Smith officiated at the services. Music was provided
by Jim Kidder, organist. Pallbearers were Bill Anderson, Larry Angove, Roger Bishop,
Jack Kingrey, Jack Onstank, Arvin Peterson, Richard Sparks, and John Stittsworth.
Gloyd was born June 24, 1928, in Marion County, the son of Charles Maurice and Grace
May Kingery Carter. He was a lifelong Marion County resident, and graduated from
Knoxville High School. He joined the Marine Corps in 1952, and served as an aircraft
engine mechanic, rising to the rank of sergeant. He was awarded the National Defense
Service Medal.
He later drove a truck for Park Bingley and Bill Ver Steeg, and operated
a bulldozer for awhile. He began working for Bellamy Telephone Co. in Knoxville
in 1956, as a repairman, and later as a cable splicer. He continued to work for
Contel Phone Company after they acquired Bellamy. He retired in 1987, after 31 years
of service.
He was united in marriage to Lila Pearl Sparks, on July 10, 1948, in
Knoxville. He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Lloyd.
He is survived
by his wife of Knoxville; his mother of Knoxville; a son, Alan Carter of MelcherDallas;
a sister, Nancy Madsen of Knoxville; and two grandchildren.
