Garth Clone Carruthers was born January 3, 1926, in Columbia, Iowa the son of Marion and Ruby (Bingaman) Carruthers.

Garth graduated in 1943 from Knoxville High School and spent his entire career farming in the Columbia, Iowa area. For several years, he also sold DeKalb seeds.

On July 16, 1948, Garth was united in marriage to Dorothy Foster. To this union, three children were born. The couple raised their children on the farm. At the age of 95 years, Garth finally retired from farming.

Garth and Dorothy enjoyed attending the functions of their children and grandchildren.

They made many trips to Texas over the years to watch Whitlee’s rodeo and show her lambs and goats at the livestock shows.

Garth and Dorothy attended the music shows at Rathbun every Saturday with family and friends and often square danced. They also enjoyed playing cards with friends and neighbors.

Garth passed away Friday, March 29, 2024, at Ramsey Village, in Des Moines, at the age of 98 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; sons: Grayling Ben Carruthers and Todd Wesley Carruthers and siblings: Neil and wife Norma and Buell and wife Jody.

Those left to honor Garth’s memory include his daughter, Krystal, and fiancé Fred Perales of Gonzales, Texas; granddaughter, Whitlee Dorothy Josephine Whitlow; grandson, Cody Levi Carruthers; great-grandson, Arturo Carruthers and many other family members and friends.

Instead of flowers, memorials may be made to the Columbia EMS, the Alzheimer’s Association, or the Columbia United Methodist Church.
