Frances Harriet (Whaley) Smith passed away on Monday, September 25, 2017, at The Wesley Village in Indianola, Iowa.

Memorial funeral services for Frances will be held Saturday, October 7, 2017, in the Community United Presbyterian Church of Hartford at 11:00 am. A private family burial will follow lunch at the church in the Hartford Cemetery.

Frances was born on September 24, 1923, in Harvey, Iowa to Jack and Fern(Dixon) Whaley. Frances graduated high school and married Robert E. Smith in 1944.

Frances worked as an aircraft welder during WWII and for Farmers Grain in Carlisle from 1965 to 1990. Frances was a member of the Community United Presbyterian Church of Hartford, Yacht Club, Pandora, UPW, and Garden Club.

She volunteered at the Botanical Center and Summerset Winery. She loved to garden, travel, and cook huge meals for family and friends; there were never too many to sit at her table. Frances loved her family, her church, and her life as a farm wife, mother, and grandmother. “We will all miss our precious Nonnie.”

Frances is survived by her 3 sons, John(Linda)Smith of The Villages, Florida, Tom(Jeani)Smith of Hartford, Ron(Diane)Smith of Carlisle, and; grandchildren, Stacy(Gary)Zoucha, Stephanie(Mike)Renner, Noah(Tricia) Smith, Marah(Brett)Neer, Katie(Trent)McIntyre, Jennie Smith(Troy Donohoe); 4 great-grandsons and 6 great-granddaughters.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Fern Whaley; husband, Robert Smith; siblings, Jack Whaley, Warren Whaley, Bob Whaley, Martha Hyde, and Betty Clark; and a daughter-in-law, Jeanne Smith.Frances Whaley
