Dorothy Jean (Foster) Carruthers was born January 17, 1926, in Columbia, Iowa the daughter of Levi and Bernice Foster.

She attended country school and graduated from Knoxville High School in 1943 with a Normal Training Certificate. She taught at Liberty Country School for nine years.

On July 16, 1948, Dorothy was united in marriage to Garth Carruthers. She became a dedicated farm wife and mother. She was a girl’s 4-H Leader and taught Bible School for many years. She was a member of the Olive Chapel United Methodist Women.

Dorothy enjoyed attending all the functions of her children and grandchildren. She made many trips to Texas over the years to watch Whitlee rodeo and show her lambs and goats at the livestock shows. Dorothy also enjoyed reading – you would never see her without a book or magazine. She also attended the music shows at Rathbun every Saturday with her family and friends.

Dorothy passed away Sunday, February 5, 2017, at the Comfort House, in Pella, at the age of 91 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sons: Grayling Ben Carruthers and Todd Wesley Carruthers.

Those left to cherish Dorothy’s memory include her husband, Garth; daughter, Krystal (Jerry) Whitlow of Beeville, Texas; granddaughter, Whitlee Dorothy Josephine Whitlow; grandson, Cody Levi Carruthers; sister, Connie (Styrl) Little of Melrose, Iowa and many other family members and friends.

A Funeral Service for Dorothy Carruthers, age 91 of Columbia, will be held Thursday, February 9, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bybee & Davis Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in the Columbia Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Columbia Rescue Unit or to the American Heart Association.
