Corwin Maurice “Cork” Hatch was born February 7, 1928, in Coin, Iowa the son of Lorin
Doyle Hatch and Mabel (Jenkins) Hatch.
Corwin’s family moved to Knoxville in 1929 and he attended Knoxville schools. He played football in high school until dropping
out in the 11th grade so he could enlist in the United States Navy during WWII.
Following his honorable discharge, Corwin returned to Knoxville for a brief period
and then moved to West Virginia.
He met Hattie Harper in West Virginia and they
later married. To this union, three daughters were born: Corlinda, Marty, and Karin.
The couple lived in Chicago and later moved back to Knoxville. Corwin started an
excavation business and through the years he helped build roads, ponds, and terraces
all over central Iowa and in Alaska and South America. He retired in 1980. For the
last 32 years of his life, Corwin’s dear friend and companion have been Marilyn Witter.
In his spare time, Cork enjoyed watching NASCAR and Kyle Korver playing for the Chicago
Bulls.
He was a very intelligent person and enjoyed studying and researching topics
of interest. He was a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, the Oriental Lodge no. 63
A.F. & A.M., the American Legion Baty-Tucker post No 168 and was a life member of
the V.F.W. John Myers Post No. 3519.
Corwin passed away on Saturday, April 16, 2011
at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital at the age of 83 years. He was preceded
in death by his parents; two brothers: Lorin and Robert Hatch and his grandson,
Stacy White.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Corlinda (Jim)
Evans of Knoxville, Marty (Robert) Cline of Winterset, and Karin (Mike) Sparks of
Knoxville, 6 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren;
his companion, Marilyn Witter of Knoxville, and her children: Rick Taylor, Jeff Taylor
and Brenda Pitt all of Pella and her 4 grandchildren and his sister, Mary Elizabeth
Durham of Knoxville and many other family members and friends.
