Services for Charles L. Shappell, 62, of Mt. Pleasant, who passed away Nov. 16, 1991, from injuries received in a single vehicle accident, were held Nov. 20 at the First United Methodist Church.
Interment with military rites were held in Forest Home Cemetery.
He was born July 9, 1929 in Knoxville, the son of Marion L. and Edna L. McVey Shappell. On Oct. 14, 1951, he married Eunice L. Soto, in Knoxville.
Revs. Henry Ledbetter and Deborah Kiesey officiated.
A graduate of Knoxville High School, he worked for Hy-Vee Food Stores for 15 years as a butcher and meat cutter at Fairfield, Centerville and Bethany, Mo. He owned and operated Shappell's Locker Service in Mt. Pleasant from 1961-71. He worked for the Mt. Pleasant Street Department until 1981 when he was promoted to the superintendent of streets.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean conflict.
He attended the First United Methodist Church; was a life member of the American Legion Post 58 and V.F.W. Post 2561, where he served on burial detail; was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Mt. Pleasant Moose Lodge 1003 and I.O.O.F., Knoxville.
Preceding him in death were his parents.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Marion L. and Richard, both of Mt. Pleasant; one daughter, Susan Shappell, Concord, Calif.; four grandchildren; one brother, Larry of Knoxville and two sisters, Doris Piekema of Story City and Dorothy Richardson and her husband, David, of Des Moines.
A memorial has been established for playground equipment and trees for the Mt. Pleasant parks.
