A celebration of life for Charles Clifford Barnes, 82, of Knoxville who died Jan. 4, 2005, at Comfort House in Pella, was held Saturday at the New Covenant Baptist Church with Pastor Craig Bex officiating
Barnes was born on March 3, 1922, in Marion County to Florence Olive Wickliff and William Arlen Barnes.
He graduated from Knoxville High School in 1940 and served as a machinist’s mate in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in forestry from Iowa State University.
On Nov. 26, 1945, he married Elizabeth Henrietta Waisner. They had three children.
Barnes worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in
Texas, Colorado, and Wyoming until he retired in 1947 and returned to Knoxville in 1979.
He was active in the Marion County Historical Society and a member of the New Covenant Baptist Church and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Barnes was preceded in death by his parents and his step-father, Vernon Nissen.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Beverly, and Martin Kloosterman of Kalamazoo, Mich.; two sons; Clifford and Joye Lynn Barnes of Parker, Colo. And Brian and Jeannie Alexander of Ledyard, Conn.; one granddaughter; one sister, Dorothy DeBolt of Santa Rosa, Calif.; one step-sister, Sharon Barnes of Rio Rancho N.M., and two half-brothers; William Barnes of Des Plaines, Ill., and Donald and Betsy Barnes of Frankford, Mo.
Memorials may be made to the Marion County Historical Society or the New Covenant Baptist Church.
