Billie Leon Ver Steeg was born June 5, 1942 in Oskaloosa, Iowa the son of William B. and Leone Opal (Ghrist) Ver Steeg.

He was raised in Knoxville and graduated with the Class of 1960. Bill started working for Hy-Vee while still in high school.

On January 12, 1963, Bill was united in marriage to Marlene Shannon at the First United Methodist Church.

He retired from Hy-Vee in September of 1998 as the produce manager. During retirement, Bill drove for DeVore Motors and Community Action Van. He also worked at Bybee & Davis Funeral Home and most recently delivered for the Hy-Vee Pharmacy.

In his spare time, Bill enjoyed watching football and basketball and was a die-hard Hawkeye fan. Bill’s greatest joy was his family, and he especially cherished his grandchildren. He and Marlene were also faithful members of St. Anthony Catholic Church.

Bill passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at the Mercy Medical Center, in Des Moines, at the age of 73 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Those left to honor Bill’s memory include his wife, Marlene; sons: Ray (Jeni) of Marshalltown and Randy (Jeri) of Big Spring, Texas; 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren, and many other family members and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Bill Ver Steeg, age 73 of Knoxville, will be held on Saturday, April 9 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Bill VerSteeg

Burial will follow in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 1:00 p.m. Friday at the Bybee & Davis Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
