Graveside services for William (Bill) James Courtney, 75, of Knoxville, who died Friday,July 18, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, were held Monday, July 21, at Breckenridge Cemetery in Knoxville.
Bill was born on March 17, 1928 in Hamilton, the son of Earnest Elmer and Alice Blanche (Fowler) Courtney. He attended elementary school in Hamilton and graduated from Knoxville High School in 1945.
He served in the Marine Corps from 1945 to 1946.
On Aug. 13, 1948 he married Patricia Joyce Beaver. To this union five children were born.
After the death of his wife in 1983, he married Mary Lou Byers (Pitt) on April 7, 1989. He was an employee of Maytag until his retirement in 1990.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Elmer, Liston,
and Harold; three sisters, Esther, Nettie; and Evelyn, his wife, Patricia; and his daughter, Joyce Ann Glover.
He is survived by his wife, Mary of Knoxville; three daughters, Cheryl Lynn Noel of Daytona Beach, Fla., Madonna Rae Courtney of Mason
City, and Cindy Lou Courtney of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a son, Harold Dean Courtney of Pleasantville; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary York of Bussey and Susie Schippers of Bussey; and a brother, Earnest of Cedar Rapids.
