Betty Marjorie (Cecil) Bacus, age 85, of Knoxville, passed away Thursday afternoon, October 29, 2015, at her home in Knoxville.
Visitation for Betty will be held from 1:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M., Sunday, November 1, 2015, at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville. Betty’s family will be present from 2 to 4:00 P.M., Sunday afternoon.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, November 2, 2015, at the Winfield Funeral Home. Following services burial will be held at Ruckman Cemetery, north of Knoxville.
Betty was born on October 24, 1930. She was the first child of Harold Cecil and Isabelle (Wilson) Cecil. Betty was a polio survivor, contracting polio at the age of 14, and was treated at the “Kenny Cottages” at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Betty graduated from Knoxville High school and prior to her marriage worked at the J.C. Penney store in Knoxville.
Betty married Beryle Dean “Buck” Bacus of Knoxville on March 15, 1952. The couple moved around in the early years of their marriage before making their home in Knoxville. Betty and Buck had two boys and two girls: Gary Dean, Donna Dianne, Kathleen Cecile, and David Mark.
Betty was a homemaker who raised her family in a Christian home filled with love and laughter. Betty always enjoyed a good laugh – even when the joke was on her. Betty was a proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved reading and crafting, and spending time with family. Betty’s faith, family, and the First Christian Church were her life. She served at church funeral dinners and helped with newsletter mailings right up until the church’s door closed.
Betty was known for her letter writing and for sending cards and notes of comfort and encouragement to friends and family throughout her life.
Betty is survived by her husband, Buck; her two sons, Gary (Jeanie) Bacus and Mark (Angela) Bacus; two daughters, Donna Bacus and Kathleen Bacus; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her sister, Shirley Kaye (Glynn) Sirpless of Flagstaff, AZ; and two nieces.
