Services for Alice (Avery) Applegate, 78, of Knoxville, who died Sept. 16, 1990, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, were held Sept. 19 at the First United Methodist Church.
Bybee and Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. The interment was in Graceland Cemetery. Rev. K. Wayne Hoehns officiated at the services. Music was provided by Linda Gehling, organist, and Stephanie Young, soloist. Pallbearers were Brent Hanna, Eddie Wagner, Bernard Avitt, David Johnson, Michael Holland, David Palmiter, and William Hardin, Jr. Honorary bearers were Carl Blythe, Carroll Johnson, Dr. George Richards, and William Hardin, Sr.
Mrs. Applegate was born Sept. 10, 1912, in Knoxville, the daughter of Arthur and Lola Culver Avery. She was a 1929 graduate of Knoxville High School and received her degree from Iowa State University in 1933.
On July 16, 1943, at Gulf Port, Miss., she married Murray Applegate. Retiring in 1978, she taught home economics in the Attica and Knoville public schools.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Morning Circle, First Federated Study Club, Chapter M P.E.O., Befrienders, Knoxville Area Community Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of the Library, Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, Iowa State Alumni and Cyclone Clubs, A.A.R.P., and was a very active supporter of the Boy Scouts of America.
In 1979, she won the Knoxville Community Betterment Award.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1979; her parents; and one brother, Bob. She is survived by two sons, Bob of Milan, Ill. And Art of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and four grandchildren.
Memorials have been established for the Alice and Murray Applegate Fund of the Boy Scouts of America and the First United Methodist Church of Knoxville.
