Alfred “Fred” Leroy Carter was born on July 23, 1936 in Knoxville, Iowa. He was
one of eight children born to Julie Verde Lee Pitt and Lewis F. Carter.
Fred graduated from Knoxville High School in 1954. Fred served two years in the
United States Army and four years in the Iowa Army National Guard.
Fred worked at Precision Pulley and Parsons Manufacturing in Newton. Fred was a wood craftsman. He worked with all kinds of wood making a variety of things from cabinets and decks to houses and garages. He would share his skills with anyone who wanted to learn
them.
When the family heated with wood, Fred loved being in the timber cutting the
wood. Fred was one of the best handymen around. He could fix almost anything. He
also liked to work on lawnmowers and chain saws. Small engine repair was a specialty.
He ran his own repair shop at home for several years.
Fred was a skilled musician who could play the guitar and mandolin. He played for his family and with them. His favorite music was bluegrass.
Alfred Leroy Carter passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2005, at the VA Medical Center in Knoxville at the age of 68 years, 9 months, and 15 days.
Those left to mourn his passings are two brothers, Marvin Carter of Flagler and Gerald Carter and his wife, Dorothy of Knoxville; one sister-in-law, Grace Carter of Melcher-Dallas; two special great-great nieces, Nikki and Erika Overton of Knoxville, and one great-great-nephew, Bret Overton of Knoxville as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
