Funeral services for Wayne Edward Sutherland 81, of Pella, who died October 30,
1999, at the Pella Regional Hospital, were held November 2, 1999, at the First United
Methodist Church in Knoxville.
Burial was at Graceland Cemetery with Military Honors
by American Legion Post #168 and Veterans of Foreign Wars # 3519. Casketbearers
were Mel Beaver, Harold Gotta, Bill Roff, Pauline Sutherland, Joe Betterton, Bob
Noftsger, Kelly Schott and Terry Zickel. Pastor Robert B. Ward officiated at the
services. Music was provided by Mark Babcock, organist.
Wayne was born, July 13,
1918 in Knoxville, the son of Gertrude Clark and Woodard Earl Sutherland.
On September
11, 1941, he was united in marriage to Helen Viola Den Hartog in Unionville, Missouri.
To this union two sons were born. Wayne was employed for 46 years by Iowa Power
and Light Company, now known as MidAmerica Energy. Helen and Wayne belonged to the
Iowa Travel Trailer Club of which Wayne served as president. They were also lifetime
members of the Wally Byam Caravan International Club.
Wayne served as president
of the Iowa Unit. Wayne was a lifetime member and past president of the Marion County
Sportsman's Club. He was a member of AMVETS. Wayne served as Noble Grand Master
of the IOOF #90. Wayne was an active member of the First United Methodist Church
where he served as head usher and held several offices. Wayne and Helen moved to
Pella in 1982.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Corwin.
Wayne is survived by his wife, son Dennis of Marion and son, John Sutherland of
Glencoe, MN, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
