Funeral services for Martin "Barney" Sneller, 66, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., who died
March 28, at Columbia Medical Center in Port St. Lucie, were held April 2, 1997,
at Bybee and Davis Funeral Home in Knoxville.
Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery,
with military honors accorded by Baty-Tucker Post #108, American Legion, and John
Myers Post #3519, V.F.W.
Alan Finestead officiated at the services. Music was provided by Jim Kidder, organist, and Barb Marvelli,
soloist. Pallbearers were Bill Adams, Bob Edwards, Tom Davidson, Raymond Glover,
Chuck Erb, Lonnie Wunn, Art McElwee, and David Pearson.
Barney was born March 28, 1931, the son of Herman and Anna VanDyke Sneller.
He was raised in Marion County, and attended Knoxville schools, graduating in 1949.
He served in the National Guard from 1948-1950, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps
from 1951-1954. He served during the Korean War and earned a Purple Heart, and a
National Defense Service Medal.
He was united in marriage to Mary Lee Dainty on March 29, 1951, in Knoxville.
The couple made their home in California, Des Moines, and finally in Carlisle
for 25 years, where they raised their family.
He was in charge of cooler maintenance for 35 years
at the Anderson-Erickson Dairy in Des Moines. He was active in all sports, especially
slow pitch softball, and is a member of the Slowpitch Hall of Fame. He retired from
the dairy in 1985, and moved to Port St. Lucie in 1986.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #318 of Port St. Lucie, and a charter member of the Treasure Coast Christian
Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister,
Margaret; and three grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lee; five daughters, Lucinda Williams of Oklahoma City, Okla., Krista
Patterson of Capitola, Calif., Marta Sneller of Cedar Rapids, Janna Hubble of Minneapolis,
Minn., and Judith Johnston of Carlisle; two sons, David Russell of Ankeny, and John
Sneller of Jupiter, Fla.; a sister, Peternella Nyswonger of Des Moines; two brothers,
Jacob Sneller of Des Moines, and Joe Sneller of Bakersfield, Calif.; and ten grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Carlisle Recreation Department.
