Memorial services for Maree DeWitt, 96, of Knoxville, who died November 6, at Westridge
Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Knoxville, were held November 13, 1998, at
the Bybee and Davis Funeral Home in Knoxville. Burial of the cremains was at Gosport
Cemetery, with military honors.
Maree was born August 20, 1902, in Gosport, the daughter of Hiriam and Vileria Morrow
DeWitt.
She was raised in the Gosport area and graduated from Knoxville High School. She
attended the University of Iowa, where she received a BA degree in nursing. She
worked in Virginia before entering the U.S. Army during World War II. She attained
the rank of Major, and was honorably discharged.
She attended Chapel Hill University in North Carolina, where she earned her Master's
degree in nursing. She worked for the VA Hospital system, as a Director of Nursing,
and through the years had worked in Shreveport, La., Des Moines, and Dallas, Texas.
After her retirement, she moved to Hollywood, Fla., to be near her brother and sister-in-law,
Park and Imogene DeWitt. She returned to Knoxville in 1988.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a twin sister, Maude Herrick; and three brothers,
Tom, Grant, and Park DeWitt.
She is survived by three nieces, Betty DeZwarte of Chariton, Pat Jessip of Knoxville,
and Nancy Elmer of Arizona; and two nephews, Denny DeWitt of Lindale, Texas, and
Tom Herrick of Milford.
Memorials may be made to the University of Iowa Nursing School.
