Lowell Steele, age 71, of Knoxville, passed from this life on April 3, 2007, in his home in Knoxville.

Lowell was born on March 17, 1936, at Corning to Leonard and Iola (Symonds) Steele and grew up in Knoxville. Lowell started working for Hy-Vee in 1960 and later in the meat department, he retired after 37 years of service. Prior to Hy-Vee, Lowell worked at Braida's Grocery in Knoxville for 10 years.

Lowell was a loving foster parent for many years providing shelter, guidance, and emotional support for 60 children over the years. Upon his retirement, Lowell spent countless hours helping friends, family, and perfect strangers. He most enjoyed all of the love, laughter, and good times spent with his grandchildren whom he cherished.

Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Roy, and two foster sons, Ray and Michael Gray.

He is survived by his daughter; Leta (Terry) Burke of Knoxville, step-daughter; Ann (Frank) Williamson of Pella, brothers; Merrell Steele of Des Moines and Bob Steele of Knoxville, sister; Arleta Voyce of Knoxville, two granddaughters, one grandson, one great-grandson; several step-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Lowell was a wonderful role model and was loved by many. We will miss his gentle manner, sense of humor, and positive attitude.

A Celebration of Life Service was held on April 7 at Bybee & Davis Funeral Home with Rev. Neil Montz officiating.

The family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to Habitat for Humanity of Marion County.
