Funeral services for John Owen Jones, 75, of Knoxville, who died March 3, at Knoxville Area Community Hospital, were held March 7, 1995, at Evans-McCleery Funeral Home in Knoxville.
Burial was at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. The Rev. Robert Morris officiated at the services. Music was provided by Jim Kidder, organist. Pallbearers were Richard Jones, Robert H. Jones Jr., Dan Anderson, Gary McClure, Mike Shinn, and Benoni Shinn. Military honors were accorded by Baty Tucker Post #168, American Legion, and John Myers Post #3519, VFW.
Owen was bom January 2, 1920, in Oelwein, the son of Thomas and Margretta Owen Jones. He spent his early life in Knoxville and Albia, playing football for both schools. He joined the Navy in 1938, and spent
23 years, serving in World War II and the Korean War.
After retiring from the Navy, he worked for the state of Virginia for 22 years. He was a longtime member of the Khediue Shrine Temple, the George W. Wright Lodge #346, the Arab Patrol, and Scottish Rite, of Norfolk, Va.
He was united in marriage to Doreen Oliver on June 12, 1945, in Portsmouth, Va., moving back to Knoxville in 1985.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, and one brother. He is survived by his wife, of Knoxville; and one brother, Bob Jones of Des Moines.
Memorials may be made to the Knoxville Rescue Unit.
