Memorial services for Howard L. Rankin, 78, of Clearwater, Fla., who died March
18, at his home, were held March 22, 1999, at the National Cremation Society in
Clearwater. Burial with military honors will be in the Dayton, Iowa Cemetery on
May 15.
Howard was born December 20, 1920, near Knoxville, the son of Fred and Maude
DeHeer Rankin. He graduated from Knoxville High School in 1938, and from Central
College in Pella in 1942. He earned a MA degree in mathematics from Drake University
in Des Moines in 1952. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1946, and earned
seven battle stars.
He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Baron on January 16,
1944, in Pella. He taught math and coached basketball at Garwin from 1946 to
1948. He served as high school principal at Zearing from 1948 to 1951, and as
superintendent at Zearing from 1951 to 1953, at Wellsburg from 1953 to 1956, and Dayton from
1956 until his retirement in 1982.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister,
June Fisher; and a brother, Keith. He is survived by his wife; three sons, twins
William of Seattle, Wash., and Robert of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Joseph of Ann
Arbor, Mich.; and three grandchildren.
