Funeral services for Leon Miller, who died March 31 at West Ridge Manor Nursing Home, were held April 2 from First United Methodist Church with Dr. Leonard E. Deaver officiating. Burial was in Lincoln Cemetery with Williams Funeral Home in charge.
Casketbearers were Richard Sullivan, Clifford Hicks, Warren Reiter, Dwight Gass, Gordon Brown and Jim Reed. Mrs. Wayne Sutherland was organist.

Leon Newton, son of Newton F. and Candice Marsh Miller, was born near Knoxville on July 3, 1905. He graduated from Knoxville High School in 192 4,, attended Iowa Wesleyan College and graduated from Drake University Law School in 1930.

He was admitted to the bar and began practice in Knoxville the same year. He was elected mayor in 1933 and city attorney in 1935 and then served as Marion County Attorney for eight years.

He was elected senator from Marion and Monroe Counties to the 55th and 56th General Assembly at which time he was appointed to the tax commission serving as chairman for six years.

On Nov. 19, 1933 he was united in marriage to Esther Todd at Ottumwa. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and served on its boards and committees for many years.

He was also a member of various Masonic bodies including Marion County Shrine Club and Za Ga Zig Shrine, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Marion County Bar Association, Iowa State Bar Association and Marion County Historical Society.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mrs. Bert (Ruby) Gose and Mrs. Everett (Ruth) Ryan.

Survivors include his wife, Esther; two daughters, Mrs. Eleanor Ogden of Northfield, Minn., and Mrs. Richard (Elizabeth) Youngberg of Des Moines; five grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Edna Hem of Knoxville; and one brother, Robert L. Miller of Exira.
