Funeral service were held for Bertha (Augustine) Johnston, 96, of Knoxville, who died at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital T.L.C. Unit on June 19, 2000.

The services were held on June 22, at the Bybee and Davis Funeral Home in Knoxville, with the Reverend Raymond Moore officiating. Interment was at the Graceland Cemetery. Casket bearers were Larry Murr, Ted Godfrey, Roger Murr and Wendell Robinson.

She was born July 19, 1903, in Marion County to Stephen B. Augustine and Clara Nimie (Walraven) Augustine.

She married Eugene Johnston in 1942. He proceeded her in death in 1977. She was raised in the Knoxville area and graduated with the Class of 1922 Knoxville High School. After graduation, she started teaching in local country schools. She attended night-school at Drake University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1958.

She retired in 1969. Bertha devoted her life to her family, and she will be remembered as a caring and very Christian person. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist women, Historical Society, Women's Club, Retired Teacher's Association and was a life member of the Iowa State Education Association.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Vivian and Nora Augustine, and Lois VandenBerg; and a brother, Loren Augustine. Arrangements were made by Bybee and Davis Funeral Home in Knoxville.
