Mr. and Mrs. Rouze A, Spaur, both 48, of Emmetsburg, were killed when they apparently
lost control of their car on an icy stretch of U. S. highway 169, Sunday night,
February 22, just south of the Minnesota border in Kossuth county.
Spaur, Gamble store manager at Emmetsburg, was killed instantly in the three-car
collision, and Mrs. Spaur died later at a Blue Earth, Minn. hospital, where their
daughter, Kathy, also was taken. She suffered a concussion.
The Spaur car slammed headon Into one driven by Edward Grettilat, of Lakota.
A few minutes later, a car driven by Doris Richardson, of Lakota, slammed into the
Spaur vehicle which lay cross ways in the highway after the first Collision.
The Spaurs were returning to Emmetsburg from Northfield, Minn.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m., Thursday, February 26, at Emmettsburg;
then the bodies will be brought to Knoxville where services will be held Friday,
February 27, at the First Methodist church, at 2 p.m. with Dr. Ernest F. Martin,
of Emmetsburg in charge, assisted layman Rev. M. D. Summerbell. Burial will be in the
Gosport cemetery. The caskets will be open from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Friday, at the
church.
Mrs. Vera Spaur is survived by two brothers, Arthur and Eddie Wagner, and one sister,
Mrs. Norland (Rita) Hayes, all of Knoxville; as well as other relatives.
